The epi-fluorescence attachment is used to employ the fluorescence technique on a stereomicroscope. The fluorescence technique is based on the ability of substances to emit light when excited by the light of a certain wavelength. Some specimens exhibit autofluorescence, while others should be treated with fluorochromes.
The attachment is mounted into the optical path between the microscope head and zoom objective. There is a 6-position rotating turret with filters inside the attachment. Five fluorescence filter cubes and a brightfield cube are simultaneously installed in the turret. A set of fluorescence filter cubes includes filters of different fluorescence wavelengths: broadband blue (B), green (G), ultraviolet (U), violet (V), and narrowband red (R). The control unit is used to select the appropriate filter and the brightness of the light source.
The excitation light sources are LEDs. The LEDs instantly reach the brightness that is set by the user. They do not heat up during prolonged use and can switch off quickly, if necessary. This makes it easy to switch from the brightfield technique to fluorescence and back again. The LED lifetime is 50,000 hours. It is recommended to choose LED-based fluorescence for higher education as it is low-maintenance and the safest.
